New England Patriots players stretch during practice on Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2012, in Indianapolis. The Patriots are scheduled to face the New York Giants in NFL football Super Bowl XLVI on Feb. 5. From left are Chad Ochocinco (85), Shaun Ellis (94), Tom Brady (12), and BenJarvus Green-Ellis (42).

The call came in the early morning hours, jarring Shaun Ellis from a deep sleep. Two buddies were on the line with some news that would shake the veteran defensive end even more. His best friend, Yusef Jenkins, was dead, shot five times in an altercation that began when he returned a car seat to the mother of his child in Anderson, South Carolina, where he and Ellis grew up.
