FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) Tom Brady tried to persuade Matt Light to return for another season by offering him a year's supply of his favorite candy bar. Offensive line coach Dante Scarnecchia reminded Light that he's still in the prime of his career.
64. Indianapolis Colts: TE Dwayne Allen, Clemson -- And the Colts continue to shape the offense of the future to look a little bit like Tom Brady's twin-tight end attack in New England. Allen was the No. 2 tight end on the board behind Stanford Coby Fleener, the Colts' second-round pick.
43: New York Jets: Stephen Hill, WR, Georgia Tech -- After getting torched by Randy Moss a few years back, the Jets get the closest thing I've seen to Moss from a pure upfield burner perspective. Hill didn't have great stats in Tech's prehistoric offense, and he doesn't run a lot of routes, but he's got the kind of raw quickness that can't be coached. Hard worker and a great kid -- he is all upside. AFC East cornerbacks just got a little nervous.
44: Kansas City Chiefs: Jeff Allen, OL, Illinois -- With Eric Winston manning the right tackle slot, expect the athletic Allen to either start right away at right guard, or move around. Ideal move guard for the Chiefs' power/speed combo offense. 45: Chicago Bears (from St. Louis Rams) -- Alshon Jeffrey, WR, South Carolina -- A tough receiver, but this is a curious move with LSU's Rueben Randle on the board. Jeffrey struggles with weight issues and can't separate well. Comparing him to Marques Colston is a but nuts -- Colston had a much better grasp of the fundamentals out of college. 46: Philadelphia Eagles -- Mychal Kendricks, LB, Cal -- A perfect fit to play outside in the Eagles' defense -- through the Andy Reid era, there's always been premium on athletic move 'backers who can cover the flats and still bring it in run fits. 47: Seattle Seahawks (from New York Jets) -- Bobby Wagner, LB, Utah State -- Wagner is an ideal Pete Carroll linebacker -- he can rush the edge and play in space; he's a two-tier player with the ability to play in nickel fronts as well. Between Wagner and Bruce Irvin, Seattle front seven just got a lot faster. You know why the NFL draft is so popular? Because it's the NFL's season for optimism. Everyone can feel good, because hey, you're about to get a future Pro Bowler, right? At the very least, a starter? Because that's what good teams do. They draft well. Bad news, though: Your team can screw this up dreadfully, and they've done it before. There's no team out there that hasn't botched a first-round draft pick. In fact, some teams make a habit of it. There's no team that's immune from it this year, either. So, on the eve of the draft, here's a reminder for all 32 teams of just how poorly things can go. From laughable arrogance to the truly tragic, here's a cautionary tale for all 32 teams on how injury, poor performance or legal entanglements can submarine a career. AFC East: New York Jets: Vernon Gholston, 6th overall, 2008 . Vernon Gholston played three years for the Jets and gave them exactly as many sacks as Verne Troyer. When you spend the sixth overall pick on a sack specialist, you're probably expecting, I don't know, at least one sack every three years. Honorable Mentions: Blair Thomas, Roger Vick, Johnny Mitchell New England Patriots: Tony Eason, 15th overall, 1983 . Not that Eason was a terrible player, but the Patriots took him one spot after the Bills took Jim Kelly and 12 spots before the Dolphins took Dan Marino. They eventually got Tom Brady in the sixth round, though, so don't shed too many tears for the Pats. Honorable Mentions: Kenneth Sims, Chris Singleton, Andy Katzenmoyer Miami Dolphins: Eric Kumerow, 16th overall, 1988 . Had the Dolphins not taken Eric Kumerow in 1988, Dan Marino's Dolphins teams might not have always had been so defensively deficient. This, really, was compounding an error, since they did it the year after they took John Bosa, a defensive bust of equal caliber. Kumerow played three years for the Dolphins and totaled five sacks. You really suck, Vernon Gholston. Honorable Mentions: John Bosa, Jamar Fletcher, Yatil Green Buffalo Bills: Tim Cousineau, 1st overall, 1979 . Tom Cousineau had a really enjoyable career, if you happen to love the Montreal Alouettes. He never played a snap for the Bills. After being drafted, he took the more lucrative offer from the CFL team. The good news is that he eventually came back, and the Bills traded his rights to Cleveland for a draft pick that turned into Jim Kelly. If that's too happy an ending for you, see the Bills formidable list of honorable mentions below. Honorable Mentions: Mike Williams, John McCargo, J.P. Losman, Aaron Maybin
The NFL released its 2012 schedule on Tuesday night. Shutdown Corner has the instant analysis. • Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos will host the Pittsburgh Steelers in a blockbuster Sunday Night Football season opener, according to Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. It's a rematch of January's wild card game (you know, the one where Tim Tebow threw a game-winning 80-yard touchdown pass to Demaryius Thomas in overtime) in name only; this one is all about Peyton's return and Mile High debut. Manning's second game will also be in primetime -- Denver travels to Atlanta in Week 2 for Monday Night Football. The Broncos' third game is a nationally televised affair on CBS against the Houston Texans. And Week 5 is the doozy: Peyton vs. Tom Brady at 4:15 ET on CBS. (How hard do you think CBS fought to keep that one off of primetime?) • Monday Night Football opens its newly-traditional doubleheader with a 7 PM game between the Cincinnati Bengals and Baltimore Ravens. The nightcap features the San Diego Chargers traveling to the Oakland Raiders. Woof. That sounded like a sign of a bad schedule to come, but the MNF sked looks improved in 2012. After two years of unwatchable midseason games, the ESPN slate doesn't have any obvious holes. • Five best Monday night games: Broncos at Falcons (Week 2), Texans at Patriots (Week 14), Bears at Cowboys (Week 5), Eagles at Saints (Week 11), Falcons at Lions (Week 16).

It appears that two of Boston's favorite sporting sons will soon be related by marriage. Boston Red Sox infielder/DH Kevin Youkilis is engaged to marry Julie Brady, the sister of some guy named Tom who happens to play quarterback for the New England Patriots. The Greek God of Walks first met Tom Terrific's sister at a postgame party at Patriot Place in 2011, just after the New York Jets booted the Patriots out of the 2010 playoffs. (Quick -- someone tell Rodney Harrison -- some good can come from postgame parties, after all!) [ Related: How Tom Brady's sibling bond helped make him a star ] Youk was reportedly in the Brady suite at Lucas Oil Stadium for Super Bowl XLVI to watch Tom's Pats lose to that other New York team. According to the Boston Herald, the couple dated for a year before deciding to tie the knot. The soon-to-be Mrs. Youk (or, in Boston parlance, 'YOOOOOOOOUK!!!!') is a schoolteacher, with a five-year-old daughter. Plans appear to be for the ceremony to happen in the offseason in California, where the Bradys are from. "He's really lucky," a friend of Youk's told the Herald. "She's a really nice person, but all the Bradys are nice people." It will be her first marriage and his second -- though his first officially. Youkilis was married -- sort of -- to Ben Affleck's ex, Enza Sambataro, though the couple apparently never filed the required paperwork. We assume things will be better organized this time.
